COVID-19 detection in 20 minutes
We have developed a quick and easy LAMP assay to detect the presence of novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) in nasal and throat swabs in 20 minutes. It is a robust one-step molecular test, with almost comparable sensitivity to RT-qPCR-based methods. These tests have been developed in our Melbourne-based facility.
COVID-19 test validation
Validation of this test was done at the Peter Doherty Institute of Infection and Immunity using both clinical and non-clinical samples. Evaluation of these tests was partially funded by the Commonwealth Government (announced 21 March 2020) in response to the shortage of testing resources during the COVID-19 pandemic. This test in now awaiting Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) approval.
An article published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology entitled “Validation of a Single-step, Single-tube Reverse Transcription-Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification for Rapid Detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA” details the performance of the GeneWorks SARS-CoV-2 One Step RNA test.
- Rapidly amplify specific target nucleic acid at a constant temperature (isothermal)
- Faster diagnosis than PCR based tests – sample to result in 30 minutes vs 3-4 hours
- No extraction or purification required – just Swab - Buffer - Assay
- Less sample required
- Amplification is followed by an anneal curve to validate amplification specificity
The test can be run on a Genie® Instrument in an 8-well strip format.
