Varroa destructor is an ectoparasitic mite that represents the most devastating pest of the European honeybee (Apis mellifera) worldwide. The mite parasitizes developing bee pupae and adult bees, feeding on fat bodies, and can transmit multiple viruses, contributing to weakened colonies and potential colony collapse. After being detected in New South Wales in June 2022, Varroa destructor has subsequently spread across multiple Australian states, ending Australia's long-held Varroa-free status. The Australian beekeeping and horticultural pollination industries, valued at billions of dollars annually, face severe long-term impacts. Management relies on an integrated approach using approved miticides, biotechnical controls, and selective breeding for Varroa-resistant bee stocks. Surveillance remains critical to track spread and support eradication and management responses.
Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) is a molecular biology technique that copies DNA or RNA at a single, constant temperature. By eliminating the rapid heat cycling required by traditional PCR, this method relies on specialized strand-displacement polymerases to unzip and replicate genetic material.
